Surf Camp or Surf Lessons in Cape Town. Which Is Right for You?

You want to learn to surf in Cape Town, but you’re not sure whether to book individual surf lessons or join a surf camp?
Both are great ways to get into the water but they offer very different experiences. So, let’s break down which one might be right for you.
When to book individual surf lessons
Surf lessons are a great option if you want to stay flexible, you’re spending a longer time in Cape Town, or you simply want to try surfing and see how you like it.
You can fit your lessons around your own schedule, take a break between sessions and decide along the way how far you want to take your surfing.
If your goal is simply to experience surfing in Cape Town for the first time, one or two lessons might be exactly what you need.
When to book a surf camp
If you want to dedicate some real time to your surfing and progress over a shorter period, a surf camp might be the better choice.
Surfing on consecutive days allows you to build on what you learned the day before. Instead of returning to the water after a long break, you can continue working on your technique, get focused feedback from your coach and gradually develop a better understanding of your board, the waves and the ocean around you.
And then there’s the social side.
You’ll spend your days in the water with people who came for the same reason you did: to surf, learn and have a good time.
Chances are, you’ll leave with more than better surfing.

Why consecutive days of surfing matter
Surfing involves a lot of movements that feel unfamiliar in the beginning: paddling, positioning yourself on the board, finding your balance and getting to your feet.
Repetition helps these movements become more familiar. When you surf regularly over several consecutive days, you have the opportunity to practise what you learned while the previous session is still fresh.
Your coach can also build on your previous sessions: identify what you’re struggling with, adjust your technique and help you work on the next step.
That continuity is one of the biggest advantages of a surf camp.
Why join a SurfXCape Surf Camp?
Because we want you to do more than simply catch a few waves.
You’ll be coached by Mbuso, a professional surfer who has spent around 18 years in the water and more than a decade coaching surfers of different levels.
He knows the Muizenberg break like the back of his hand, from how the waves behave to where you should position yourself and what conditions work best for your level.
Throughout the week, you’ll get individual feedback and learn more about technique, wave selection, ocean awareness and how to progress beyond simply standing on your board.
But surfing doesn’t only happen in the water.
Our camp takes a broader approach to surf performance, with additional knowledge around surf-specific strength training, mobility, yoga and nutrition to support your time in the water.
Think of it as a week dedicated to becoming a more confident, knowledgeable and capable surfer.
Who doesn’t need a surf camp?
Honestly? Not everyone.
If surfing is simply something you’d love to try while you’re visiting Cape Town, you probably don’t need an entire surf camp.
Book a lesson, get into the water and have fun.
You’ll have much more flexibility to explore Cape Town around your lesson and if you fall in love with surfing afterwards, you can always come back for more.
Why Cape Town?
There’s a reason Muizenberg has become one of Cape Town’s best-known places to learn to surf.
The waves at Muizenberg can offer conditions suitable for beginners while also giving progressing surfers room to develop their skills. And outside the water, Surfers Corner has its own little surf world of cafés, surf shops, boards and wetsuits walking down the street, and people checking the waves before starting their day.
During the SurfXCape Surf Camp, you’ll stay in our surf guest house in Muizenberg, just a few minutes from the beach.
That means your week doesn’t have to revolve around getting across Cape Town every morning just to surf. You can wake up in Muizenberg, head to the ocean and become part of the neighbourhood for a week.
And when you want to explore beyond Muizenberg, the rest of Cape Town is still within easy reach.
Surf. Eat. Recover. Explore. Repeat.
So if your interested in surf lessons in Muizenberg, you can find out more here.
