Surf Etiquette for Surf Beginners

Muizenberg beach is perfect for beginners, but it’s still important to know a few things about surfing in order to protect not only yourself but also others.

1. Don’t drop in
Look before getting on a wave if there is a person already riding it. The person closest to the peak has priority on this wave. The peak is the highest point of the wave and close to the pocket and where the wave is starting to break.

2. Don’t ditch your board
When you jump off your board, make sure nobody is behind you. Your board can potentially hit them. So especially when you’re paddling out or pushing your board over a wave, keep others behind you in mind.

3. Paddle out wide
When paddling out, keep an eye out on others that are already surfing. Be aware of where they’re going and paddle out wide. Go around breaking waves, especially if someone’s riding it.

4. Stay close to your coach
Especially as a beginner surfer, going out with a coach will help you get confident in the water quicker. They’ll be able to guide you through the social dynamics during your lesson, so it’s important you always stay close to them and listen to what they’re saying. They have your best interest and are protecting you.

5. Be respectful
Mistakes happen! So if they do, just acknowledge them and apologize. Be kind, understand and respect the locals too. We’re all a big community and want to enjoy the ocean together.

Enjoy the ride! And don’t forget, everyone starts somewhere and everyone has been a beginner once!
