How Many Surf Lessons Do You Need as a Beginner?
So, you want to learn to surf in Cape Town but how many surf lessons do you actually need?
Is one beginner surf lesson enough to get you standing on a board? Should you book a few lessons right away? Or do you need to commit to a full surf package before you even know whether you like it?
The short answer: it depends on what you want to get out of surfing.
If you simply want to experience surfing while you're in Cape Town, one lesson can be perfect. If you actually want to learn how to surf independently or see whether surfing could become your new hobby, a few lessons will give you much more time to understand the basics, practise them and build on what you've already learned.
Let's break it down.
Is one surf lesson enough?
It absolutely can be.
If you've never surfed before and simply want to find out what it feels like, a single beginner surf lesson is a great place to start.
During your first lesson, you'll usually learn the basic principles of surfing, including how to position yourself on the board, paddle, catch a wave and get to your feet. You'll also learn some basics about ocean safety before getting into the water.
And then comes the fun part: actually trying it.
Some people stand up surprisingly quickly. Others spend most of their first lesson figuring out their balance, timing and pop-up. Both are completely normal.
One lesson might be right for you if you're:
trying surfing for the first time
only in Cape Town for a short visit
not sure yet whether surfing is your thing
looking for a fun experience rather than learning to surf independently
And if you finish your lesson wanting more? You can always come back.

What changes when you take more than one surf lesson?
Quite a lot.
Your first surf lesson involves a lot of new information at once.
You're learning how to lie on the board, where to look, when to paddle, when to get up, where to put your feet and all that while waves are moving underneath you.
By your second or third session, some of those things aren't completely new anymore.
Instead of starting from zero, you can work on what happened during your previous lesson. Maybe you're getting up consistently but struggling with your stance. Maybe your pop-up is good, but your timing needs work. Or perhaps you're ready to start understanding which waves to catch instead of relying entirely on your coach.
That's one of the biggest advantages of booking several beginner surf lessons: your coach can start building on your surfing instead of simply introducing you to it.
So, how many beginner surf lessons should you book?
There's no magic number because everyone learns differently.
But we like to think about it this way:
One lesson: experience surfing.
Two lessons: try it again and start working on what you learned the first time.
Four lessons: give yourself enough repetition to start developing your surfing and understanding the ocean a little better.
That's also why we offer both individual beginner surf lessons and lesson packages at SurfXCape.
You don't need to commit to becoming a surfer before you've even touched a board. But if you already know that you want to learn, booking several sessions gives you much more opportunity to build on each lesson. Many of our customers start with a beginner package and continue with intermediate coaching as their surfing progresses.
Will I stand up during my first surf lesson?
Maybe! And there's a good chance you'll surprise yourself.
But standing up shouldn't be the only way you measure whether your first surf lesson was successful.
Learning to surf also means learning how to move on a board, paddle, position yourself, read what's happening around you and become comfortable in the ocean.
Some beginners stand on their first few waves. Others need a little longer.
Surfing isn't a race.
And despite what Instagram might make you believe, nobody expects you to look graceful while you're learning. Falling off is very much part of the process. We've all been there and we're all on our own timeline.
One lesson or a surf package: which should you choose?
If you're still unsure, keep it simple.
Book one lesson if you want to try surfing.
Book a package if you want to learn surfing.
Neither is the better choice, they simply serve different purposes.
And you don't have to decide how far you want to take surfing before your first session.
Sometimes one wave is enough to answer that question for you.
And if you want more after one surf lesson, we can always turn it into a package.
