Come Surf With Me!

Peak Into My Training Session Prep:

Ever wondered what it’s like to head out for a surf training session in Cape Town?

Well, come along—I’ll take you with me to Muizenberg!

Let’s go.

Muizenberg beach in Cape Town during sunset

My day usually kicks off early. I prefer low tide, and mornings tend to be ideal for longboarding in Muizenberg. After checking the swell forecast (this isn’t an ad, promise), I get my gear together, grab a coffee-to-go, and head to the shop.

But first—a little detour. I swing by the beach to check the waves in person. There’s nothing quite like that first breath of salty ocean air with a warm coffee in hand.

At the shop, I slip into my wetsuit (hopefully it’s dry), and start waxing my board for better grip. There’s already enough flying around in surfing—we don’t want to jinx it. Waxing is just part of the ritual… unless you’re riding a soft top, of course—those don’t need wax.

I hydrate, grab my board, and make my way down to the beach, excited to get back into the water. The waves are looking promising today!

But first, a quick warm-up. Gotta stay loose to stay sharp—and injury-free. I focus mostly on hip flexors (for the pop-up) and shoulders (for paddling). It’s simple, but it makes all the difference.

Then finally—the moment I’ve been waiting for. I strap on my leash, tuck the board under my arm, and walk into the ocean. Looking out at the horizon, I know this session holds some opportunities.
