Frequently Asked Questions
For many first-time travelers, visiting Cape Town is an exciting adventure filled with new impressions. We believe surfing is one of the best ways to make your trip even more special — it opens the door to a unique lifestyle and creates unforgettable memories
Since many of our guests are not only visiting South Africa for the first time but also trying surfing for the very first time, we’ve put together answers to the most common questions we hear.

1. Where do the surf lessons take place?
All our lessons take place in Muizenberg, Cape Town. It is know to be the safest and most popular beach for beginner surfers.
We meet at Lifestyle Surf Shop, get your gear and then head to Muizenberg Beach.
2. Do I need to bring my own surfboard and wetsuit?
No. We provide all equipment (board and wetsuit) as part of your lesson. Just bring a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, water and a snack (if you like).
3. How long is a surf lesson?
Each lesson is around 90 minutes, including safety briefing, warm-up, and time in the water.
4. Can I join if I’ve never surfed before?
Absolutely! Most of our guests are complete beginners. We focus on safety and fun, making sure you feel confident in the water.
5. How much does a surf lesson cost?
A single lesson is R600. We also offer twin, group, and package deals for even better value.
6. Is Muizenberg good for learning to surf?
Yes! Muizenberg is known worldwide as one of the best beginner surf spots. The waves are gentle, consistent, and perfect for first-time surfers. We have a Blog Post that explains why Muizenberg is great for beginners.
7. What language are the lessons in?
Lessons are in English, but our coaches are patient and used to working with people from all over the world.
8. Do you offer private lessons?
Yes, in fact, all our lessons are private. That means you’ll never be placed in a group of strangers. If you book a twin or group session, it will be just for you and your friends or family.
9. Can kids join the lessons?
Yes, kids from about 5 years old can join, as long as they feel safe in the water. They don’t necessarily have to be able to swim, we stay in shallow water.
10. Do I have to be able to swim in order to learn to surf?
No, we had many customers who weren’t able to swim. Just tell us in advance and you’ll be fine. With beginner surfer we stay in shallow water anyway.
11. Do I have to be fit in order to learn to surf?
You don’t have to be an athlete to start surfing! Any fitness-level is welcome!
12. I am not the youngest anymore, can I still learn to surf?
Absolutely! Mbuso’s oldest beginner surfer was an 80 year old lady and she smashed it!
13. I have an injury. Can I surf anyway?
If you’re severely injured, we recommend not to surf or go into the water at all.
If you’re not severely injured, it depends on the injury. Talk to us about it!
14. I feel sick. Can I surf anyway?
Usually we’d say no but it depends. If you “just” have a stuffy nose, the ocean can maybe even cure it. If you feel like you’re coming down with something heavy, just reach out to us and postpone.
15. I’m very nervous about my first surf lesson. Any advice?
We got you! It is totally normal to be nervous before your first surf lesson, even before your fourth. We respect the ocean and its power, so we make sure we prepare you, teach you ocean safety and also surf etiquette. Our coach will always be near you, so in case you don’t feel comfortable or anxious, please don’t hesitate to tell your coach.
It is very common to be nervous or anxious in the water.
Our founding partner Christine was Mbuso’s student, she’s an HSP herself (hypersensitive person), so she gave an interview about her experience.
15. I need to cancel my surf lesson. What do I do?
If you booked via our website, there’s a “reschedule or cancel” button in the confirmation email.
If you booked via phone, please contact us there and let us know.
If you reach out to us 24h before the lesson, we can reschedule easily.
If you cancel less than 24h before your lesson, we refund 50%.
